I was tempted to call it a roundtrip like before, but that’s not really what it is on the map. Starting on September 17th, I’ll be on my way to several events in the Netherlands, Germany and Austria. As usual, I’m looking forward to meeting lots of people — if you’re in the vicinity of any of my stops and want to meet up, let me know and I’ll see what I can do!

Of course there’ll also be the odd DevExpress license given out as …

I was just looking to get the newest stuff to install in a new VM, and found myself very confused by the various ways of getting hold of Code Contracts. So, there are two different places where downloads are provided: the Microsoft Research download page via their Code Contracts page and the DevLabs page that is linked from there. According to the info on these pages, the DevLabs packages come with a commercial license, while the others have an Academic License that I haven’t looked into. So fa …

Yesterday I wrote that I was going to roll back my Snow Leopard update today. I just wanted to post a quick update, because as things are, I’ve decided to stay on it. The main reason is that I managed to fix my alpine build today. Turns out that a workaround had been included in the OS X dependent code parts of alpine, to account for the fact that Apple used to have PAM headers in include/pam instead of include/security, like all other systems do. In 10.6 this has been fixed, and so the wor …

Today I ran the update to Snow Leopard on my laptop. Tomorrow I’m going to roll back that update — I’ll certainly try again, but now doesn’t seem to be the time. Snow Leopard broke a few probably minor, but to me rather important things. Here’s a summary of what I found.

After the update ran through, everything was almost good for a start. I saw a few messages coming up for kexts, but nothing that seemed serious to me. All system stuff was working. One odd thing I noticed is that I had been r …

I was just trying to record a Camtasia video in my Windows VM running in VMWare on the Mac. Couldn’t record any audio. Impossible. Of course the whole configuration isn’t exactly clear — VMWare doesn’t tell you exactly which “channels” (is that the word? I’m talking about mic, line in, …) it is connecting into the VM, and Windows doesn’t have any tools that are in the least helpful trying to find out if any channels deliver a signal. So I tried everything and it didn’t work. I had audio out …

… when hardware acceleration is switched on. Yeah, that’s weird, isn’t it? I’ve seen it several times on different machines though, including that one time when WPF was just killing my machine and I hunted around for the reason for two hours before remembering… Part of the reason for this post. So, if WPF is running oddly slowly in your VM, try switching off the hardware acceleration setting. In VMWare Fusion on the Mac, you need to click on the Display icon in the settings window t …

I’m using SoundTrack Pro to do editing on recordings for Sod This [LINK REMOVED], have done so since the first episode. Cool software, usually. But sometimes shit happens in it, and it’s just unbelievable. When recording, I always try to remember to switch the track to mono, but about half the time I forget. By default it records in 24 bit, 44100 Hz, and saves as an AIFF file. So a typical one track recording ends up being a cool 600MB or so, in stereo. Anyway, so I have to bring the thing down …

@DerAlbert just pointed me at an article in German, which links to a PDF file with release notes for a recent pre-release Snow Leopard version. What it says is that a 64 bit kernel will not be used by default in Snow Leopard — in spite of all the advertising Apple has done for the 64 bit focus of Mac OS X 10.6. Although this information is about pre-release software (and yes, it shouldn’t be out there at all — somebody must have broken their NDA), it doesn’t seem likely that things will chang …
